CHEROKEE, Iowa – Tyson Foods, Inc. announced layoffs of 60 workers at the company's Cherokee, Iowa, pork processing plant. The layoffs are effective immediately.

“As part of our ongoing effort to operate efficiently, we’ve shifted some of the production at Cherokee to other facilities,” Dan Fogleman, Tyson Foods spokesman, said in a statement. “As a result we’ve made the difficult decision to temporarily layoff approximately 60 workers, effective today (1/17).

“We don’t take this decision lightly and will be working with the affected employees to help them identify other job opportunities within our company – perhaps at Dakota City or Storm Lake,” Fogleman added. “They also have the opportunity to be recalled for work at Cherokee in the weeks and months ahead if business conditions bring about the need for expanded production or other jobs become open through normal attrition.”
