STACYVILLE, Iowa – The Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is investigating a fish kill in the Little Cedar River north of Stacyville following a manure spill at a hog farm, Iowa. Dead fish were found along a half-mile of stream.

The DNR identified the source of the spill as Pronet Farms of Stacyville. A coupling on a hose used to land apply manure from the hog farm broke late Oct. 31, releasing approximately 5,000 gallons of manure into the Little Cedar River, according to DNR. The agency received a report about the spill at 11 p.m. the same day. Beaver dams slowed the flow of manure, DNR noted.

Approximately 100,000 gallons of manure was pumped and applied to land to prevent the manure from flowing farther downstream, DNR said. DNR workers pumped the stream into the afternoon of Nov. 1. Fisheries biologists from DNR will conduct an assessment of the fish kill, the agency said.
