A proposed $1 million settlement and other costs will go to a judge in early 2015 for approval. The settlement is to cover refunds to customers who bought beef products that were later recalled. By October 2013, roughly 200 individuals had joined the class action lawsuit against XL Foods.
Beef contaminated withE. coliO157:H7 sickened some individuals and prompted the recall of more than 1,800 products. A panel appointed to review the investigation of the recall found that shipments of tainted beef might not have gone into the food chain had the company followed proper food-safety procedures and its own protocols.
