LIVINGSTON, CALIF. — Foster Farms has reached an agreement to buy the Fernando's and El Extremo foodservice brands from ConAgra Foods. Terms of the deal, expected to close next week, were not disclosed.
Dating back to 1982, the Fernando's brand is one of the original frozen foodservice Mexican brands offering a full line of authentic Mexican entrées and appetizers ready to heat and serve. Fernando's products include hand-rolled burritos, taquitos, mini-tacos, enchiladas and more. El Extremo is another foodservice, frozen Mexican brand serving the school-lunch program distribution channel.
"This acquisition is a strategic fit for Foster Farms," said Ron Foster, Foster Farms' president and chief executive officer, "and will give us capabilities to expand our current businesses in the foodservice, retail and C-Store Channels."
One processing plant in Compton, Calif., which is used exclusively to produce hand-held Mexican products under the Fernando's and El Extremo labels, is included in the sale and will remain operational, Foster Farms relays.
