OTTAWA, Ontario – Two more farms in the Canadian province of Ontario have reported outbreaks of porcine epidemic diarrhea virus (PEDv) bringing the total number of cases to 10, according to news reports.

The two new cases were identified at farrow-to-finish farms in Chatham-Kent and Perth County, according to the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture and Food website. Chatham-Kent has a total of three farms battling the virus and one case each in Middlesex, Norfolk and Simcoe. Off-farm sampling uncovered the virus at an assembly yard, a processing plant and trucking yards. No other provinces have reported cases of PEDv.

The Canadian government has committed to spending C$2 million to help pork producers contain the disease. The Canadian Food Inspection agency is permitting emergency access to the iPEDv+ vaccine. Trade organizations are urging members to maintain strict biosecurity protocols and to contact their veterinarians immediately if animals begin showing any signs of illness.

Canada’s first positive case of PEDv was confirmed on Jan. 23.
