Wendy's announced its intention to source pork from producers who transition to group housing systems for pregnant sows. In March 2012, the company began requiring its US and Canadian pork suppliers to provide plans to phase out gestation stalls from their operations. Wendy's is one of at least 60 companies that called for an end to gestation stalls in pork production.
“Additionally, as a result of recent announcements by two suppliers who currently make up the majority of our raw materials (pork) business, we are confident we will continue to make progress towards our goal of eliminating the use of sow gestation stalls in our supply chain by the end of 2022,” the company said on its website. “We maintain our commitment of achieving gestation stall-free sourcing, and welcome the ongoing and expanded cooperation from our suppliers.”
Wendy's has given preferential buying to pork producers who adopt plans to phase out the stalls since 2007, according to the company.
