Dr. Hurd was well known and held in high regard for his expertise in livestock industry issues. His areas of expertise included risk assessment, antibiotic resistance, epidemiology, bovine spongiform encephalopathy and
Salmonellacontrol in food animals.
Dr. Hurd had been an educator at Iowa State Univ. since 2004, but his service to the industry also included time spent at the US Department of Agriculture, where he was Deputy Undersecretary for Food Safety in 2008. He also served as Director of the World Health Organization Collaborating Center.
Dr. Hurd received his Ph.D. in Epidemiology and Economics from Michigan State Univ. in 1990, a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from Iowa State Univ. 1982, and a Bachelor of Science in Biology from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State Univ. in 1978.
Visitation for Dr. Hurd will be held April 6, from 1-4 pm at St. Cecilia¹s in Ames, Iowa. The funeral will be Monday, April 7, at 10:30 am at the same church.
