NAHLN noted that the number of states reporting at least one confirmed case of PEDv remains at 29, but cases have also been diagnosed in Virginia which would bring the actual state count to 30.
PEDv has claimed the lives of millions of piglets. The tight supplies of pork have caused pork prices to jump by more than 10 percent. A recent Rabobank report stated that if the virus continues to spread, the shortfall to US hog slaughter could be as much as 15 million hogs in 2014.
In April, the US Department of Agriculture announced the agency will require reporting of PEDv and Swine Delta Coronavirus cases in order to slow the spread of swine disease across the United States. USDA also requires industry to track movements of pigs, vehicles and other equipment leaving premises already affected by the disease.
