GARNER, N.C. — Three employees were killed at ConAgra Foods’ 500,000 sq. ft. Slim Jim meat snacks plant in Garner, N.C., just south of Raleigh, from an explosion that occurred around 11:30 a.m. on June 9. The blast ripped the building’s roof off its supports in certain areas causing the roof in those areas to collapse. More than 40 people were taken to hospitals, including three firefighters who inhaled ammonia gas, according to The Associated Press.

Approximately 280 employees were working at the plant at the time of the explosion. Company and local authorities are investigating the cause of the explosion.

The company has established a fund for contributions from ConAgra Foods, its employees and the local community.
