Foster Farms initiated a voluntary recall of fresh chicken products sold under the Foster Farms or private-label brand names produced in March with varying “use or freeze by” dates ranging from March 16, 2014, to March 31, 2014, and Sunland frozen chicken products that have a "best by" date of March 7, 2015, to March 11, 2015 on concerns the products are contaminated by
SalmonellaHeidelberg.
FSIS has clarified the dates to include varying "use or freeze by" dates ranging from March 16 through March 31 and Aug. 29, 2015, through Sept. 2, 2015, for fresh and frozen chicken products sold under Foster Farms or private label brand names. FSIS also included frozen Sunland Chicken products with “best by” dates from March 7 through March 11, 2015, and Aug. 29, 2015, through Sept. 2, 2015.
The Atlanta-based Centers for Disease Control and Prevention linked Foster Farms' chicken products to 621SalmonellaHeidelberg illnesses reported across 27 states and Puerto Rico. Members of Congress have urged the US Department of Agriculture to shut down Foster Farms until the contamination has been eradicated.
