The Oak Brook, Ill.-based chain pulled meat and poultry items from its menus after a television report showed workers at Shanghai HUSI Food Co. Ltd. picking up meat from the plant floor and mixing fresh meat with expired meat. The plant is a local subsidiary of Aurora, Illinois-based OSI Group LLC.
Officials with the Shanghai Food and Drug Administration closed the plant, while Shanghai police took five people into custody for their involvement in the food safety scandal.
McDonald's said the company had increased orders from other suppliers while researching options for new ones. Papa John's Yum! Brands, Inc. and Burger King Worldwide, Inc. stopped sourcing meat from HUSI Food processing plants in Shanghai.
