TUCKER, Ga. – A new video series puts the spotlight on environmental stewardship at poultry and egg farms. The US Poultry & Egg Association (USPOULTRY) is releasing the series.
“USPOULTRY and our members recognize the importance of acknowledging family farms for exemplary environmental stewardship,” said John Starkey, USPOULTRY president. “We are pleased to be able to provide a video series that highlights their efforts.”
The first video features Bar G Ranch Poultry in Rogers, Texas. Bar G Ranch is one of USPOULTRY's 2014 Family Farm Environmental Excellence Award winners. The award was created to recognize exemplary environmental stewardship by family farms engaged in poultry and egg production. Winners are rated on several categories, such as dry litter or liquid manure management, nutrient management planning, community involvement, wildlife enhancement techniques, innovative nutrient management techniques and participation in education or outreach programs.
Darrell and Shannon Glaser own and operate Bar G Ranch, which consists of 500 acres dedicated to raising turkeys for Cargill Turkey Production, LLC in addition to a beef cattle and forage operation. The Glasers added four turkey brooder houses from 1994 to 1996 with hopes of saving a struggling farm that had been in the family for more than 100 years.
The litter produced by the turkey operation – combined with responsible management of nutrients in the litter – restored productivity to the pasture and forage land that now supports a beef cattle operation.
“We take pride in our farm and our environmental management practices and appreciate that others will be able to see this through the new video series by USPOULTRY,” said Darrell Glaser, Bar G Ranch Poultry.
The video can be views on the USPOULTRY YouTube Channel.
