Cumberland County staff was directed to work with Kansas City Sausage Co., Sampson County and the Fayetteville Public Works Commission to develop ways to connect the plant to the North Cumberland Regional Sewer System (NORCRESS). Kansas City Sausage acquired the assets of Martin's Abattoir & Wholesale Meats in December 2013.
Under the partnership, Kansas City Sausage would pay an estimated $1.1 million to build a proposed pumping station and pipeline in addition to upgrades to NORCRESS, according to the report. The processing capacity of the plant is 700 to 1,000 swine per day.
Martin's Abattoir & Wholesale Meats closed its beef slaughterhouse and processing facilities in September 2013 after 58 years of business. The company was among the largest privately owned businesses in North Carolina. But the lack of affordable cattle prompted the family's decision to cease operations. Martin's employed 180 workers. Reopening the plant would create 100 to 150 jobs.
