Plans include a new 80,000 sq.-ft. facility, which will expand turkey production more than 45 percent, according to a news release. The co-op’s feed mill in Broadway, Va. and its grain elevator in Hinton will support the higher production.
“We are excited to announce this expansion and hope this accomplishment will continue to invigorate the agriculture community throughout the region,” said John King, II, general manager of the co-op. “This expansion will incorporate the very latest technology into our processes. We are responding directly to customer demands and growth requirements, while also taking care of our employees through processing modifications.
“Our ongoing commitments to food safety and animal welfare also factor heavily in this expansion,” he added.
Virginia Poultry Growers Cooperative is the eighth-largest turkey processor in the United States with 165 member-growers. It also is the largest supplier of organic and antibiotic-free poultry meat. The company employs nearly 565 workers in the region.
