WASHINGTON – Holten Meat Inc. of Sauget, Ill., launched a recall of approximately 501,509 lbs. beef patties due to misbranding, the Food Safety and Inspection Service of the US Department of Agriculture reported.
A company employee discovered that monosodium glutamate (MSG) was used in the product but not listed on the package labeling, FSIS said. There have been no reports of adverse reactions associated with the beef patties. But MSG may cause allergy-type reaction in individuals who may have sensitivity to it.
The individually frozen patties were produced between Feb. 13 and July 28. Affected products include 1.5-lb. cartons containing six pieces of “EXTRA VALUE MEATS QUARTER POUND BEEF PATTIES,” and 1.5-lb. resealable bags containing six pieces of “QUICK SERVE EXTRA VALUE MEATS BEEF PATTIES.”
The products bear establishment number “EST. 2591” inside the USDA mark of inspection and the Universal Product Code (UPC) Item #79821-00043. FSIS said the beef patties were shipped to retailers and distributors nationwide and the Bahamas.
