This past month, more than 2 million lbs. of turkey bacon produced at a Kraft Heinz Foods Company, Newberry, SC, plant were recalled after the company received consumer complaints of spoilage before the “Best When Used By” date, the Food Safety Inspection Service of the US Dept. of Agriculture reported.
FSIS said Kraft Heinz has received reports of illness related to consumption of the turkey bacon, although the agency has received no reports. Kraft Heinz discovered the problem during its own investigation of spoilage-related consumer complaints, FSIS noted.
The affected products included Oscar Mayer Selects Uncured Turkey Bacon and Oscar Mayer Turkey Bacon Smoked Cured Turkey Chopped and Formed. Kraft Heinz distributed the turkey bacon nationwide and exported some product to the Bahamas and St. Martin.
Kraft Heinz did not respond to MEAT+POULTRY’s request for comment.
