A farrow-to-partial-finish farm was confirmed for PEDv on Jan. 15 in Bruce County, and a third farrow-to-finish farm in Lambton County tested positive for the virus on Dec. 2, 2015 — nearly five months after the last confirmed PEDv case in July.
“Sampling has been ongoing at assembly yard, trucking yards and processing plants since Jan. 25,” Ontario Pork said on its website. “Some positive samples have been found; many negative samples have been found.”
Ontario Pork reported earlier this month that environmental testing had shown increased detections of PEDv at federal and provincial processing plants. The organization said cold weather may be a factor contributing to the rise in positive samples. On-testing netted 87 total confirmed cases so far, according to the Ontario Pork website.
Canada’s first confirmed case of PEDv was Jan. 23, 2014, in Ontario. The virus was identified in the United States for the first time in 2013. PEDv is extremely difficult to contain and can cause 100 percent mortality in nursing piglets.
