COLUMBUS, Ohio – White Castle became the latest foodservice chain to make the cage-free commitment. The company said its goal is to transition to sourcing eggs from cage-free hens by 2025, but hopes to beat the deadline.
“Switching to cage-free eggs is something we’ve seriously considered since we began looking at the issue and today’s announcement represents us being responsive to customer preferences,” Jamie Richardson, White Castle vice president, said in a statement. “We’re proud to serve our guests food that both comes at a value and aligns with their values.”
White Castle made the decision to switch to cage-free eggs following a months-long review of its supply chain. The company also has been working with The Humane Society of the United States on this issue.
“We welcome White Castle’s cage-free shift as an important advancement that makes sense for animals and the bottom line alike,” said Matthew Prescott, senior food policy director for HSUS.
White Castle has embraced a commitment to “food safety, cleanliness and total transparency.” Part of that initiative includes WhiteCastleClean.com, a website that features inspection reports and scores from all of its locations.
