WESTBOROUGH, Mass. – BJ’s Wholesale Club Inc. initiated a recall of Citterio Mortadella and deli meats sold from Jan. 20 through Feb. 3 on concerns the products may contain undeclared pistachios. Individuals who have an allergy or severe sensitivity to pistachios are at risk of a life-threatening reaction if they eat these products, BJ’s said. However, no illnesses have been reported to date.
The company said it is recalling the Citterio Mortadella because it may contain undeclared pistachios. Additionally, deli meats that may have come in contact with the same equipment as the Citterio Mortadella also are being recalled. These sliced deli meats are sold in individual service bags, the company noted. The affected products were sold at BJ’s club stores in Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Virginia.
BJ’s said the problem occurred when the company mistakenly received Citterio Mortadella containing pistachios, but the company’s deli labels do not list pistachios as an ingredient. BJ’s Wholesale is recalling all deli meats produced during the same timeframe because the Mortadella may have been sliced on the same equipment as other deli meats. The company added that deli cheeses are sliced on separate equipment and are not subject to the recall.
“BJ’s is coordinating closely with the US Food and Drug Administration and has taken precautionary steps, including removing all potentially-impacted products from its delis and disinfecting the deli equipment and surfaces,” the company said in a statement.
Club members can return the Mortadella with a receipt at their local BJ’s. If a member does not have a receipt, a BJ’s staff member can look it up.
