SHAWNEE MISSION, Kan. – Seaboard Farms has delayed expansion plans for the company’s hog operations in Greeley County, Iowa, the company recently confirmed.
In November 2015, the Kansas Dept. of Health and Environment granted Seaboard permits to build nine lagoons to store waste from 120 finishing barns housing about 1,100 pigs each.
“Based on our short-term need for barn space for the finishing phase of pig production, we delayed construction of new barns at our Ladder Creek West Farm,” said David Eaheart, director of communications and marketing. “We have the proper permits to operate the farms, and we will reevaluate later this year our space needs based on our pig production to determine when to start barn construction.”
The Ladder Creek West Farm is about nine miles from the company’s existing Ladder Creek Farm. The proposed expansion would have increased the company’s operations in Greeley County to more than 300,000 mature hogs.
