SMITHFIELD, Va. – Smithfield Foods Inc. highlighted the company’s food safety and quality initiatives on July 13 as part of its recently released  2015 Sustainability and Financial Report. The company released its new ingredient glossary, providing consumers with details about approximately 100 ingredients used in Smithfield’s products. This is the third of five installments focused on the report.

The glossary is part of Smithfield’s Food Safety & Quality segment of its 15th annual sustainability 2015 report, which outlines investments in research, technology and products to improve food safety practices. It provides information about the programs and practices that helped Smithfield attain zero US Dept. of Agriculture recalls for two years and maintain its Global Food Safety Initiative at all facilities. It also details new, healthier products which provide higher nutritional benefits, simplified ingredients and innovative techniques that improve the nutrition profile of the company’s products.

The ingredient glossary is the newest tool of Smithfield’s product-focused developments. The first online resource of its kind in the pork processing industry, it lists information on the ingredients used in Smithfield’s products, including name, definition and use.

“We’re committed to upholding the highest standards of transparency in every aspect of our business from our animal care practices and environmental impact to how we make our products,” said Stewart Leeth, vice president of regulatory affairs and chief sustainability officer for Smithfield Foods. “Our new online ingredient glossary echoes this commitment by providing consumers and other stakeholders with useful, accessible and easy-to-understand information about the ingredients we use to produce high-quality food.”

The company’s Animal Care and Environment sections have already been released and are available with the third installment at smithfieldfoods.com/foodsafety. The final installment, Helping Communities and People, will be released later in July. The full report will be available in August.
