KANSAS CITY — Tex-Mex mashups are having a moment on menus.
Burger King is bringing burgers and burritos together with its new Whopperrito. The handheld hybrid features flame-grilled 100 percent beef seasoned with Tex-Mex spices, tomatoes, onions, lettuce, pickles and queso sauce wrapped in a flour tortilla.
“We’re infusing classic American fare with Tex-Mex flare,” said Alex Macedo, president, North America, for Burger King. “The Whopperrito is a new interpretation of the Tex-Mex trend in a way that only Burger King restaurants could imagine and uses the classic flame-grilled 100 percent beef Whopper sandwich meat to set this burger-burrito hybrid apart from other burritos out there.”
Fusing a barbecue staple with the traditional taco, Qdoba Mexican Eats is launching the Outlaw Knockout Taco, which features smoked brisket, Ancho Chile BBQ sauce, habanero salsa, corn salsa, cilantro and Cotija cheese served on a warm corn tortilla.
At Taco John’s, two Tex-Mex dishes mingle to create the chain’s new Quesadilla Tacos. The Mexican mashup features two corn flour tortillas covered with pepper jack cheese that are grilled, folded and filled with chili lime chicken, tomatoes, lettuce and a new smoky chipotle sauce.
Melding a favorite American side with a classic Mexican dish, Charleys Philly Steaks is launching loaded fries featuring nacho fixings. The new Nacho Deluxe Fries consist of the chain’s fries loaded with warm cheddar cheese sauce, shredded cheddar cheese, bacon bits, diced tomatoes, jalapeño ranch dressing, jalapeños and chives.
