KANSAS CITY, Mo – Smithfield Foods’ hog processing plant in Monmouth, Illinois, will operate on a limited production schedule Sept. 8 following a fire that occurred in the rendering portion of the plant Sept. 5, according to a Smithfield spokeswoman. Production is set to resume at full schedule Sept. 9 and 10.
There were no injuries as a result of the blaze. The plant, which employs approximately 1,500 workers, was shut down after the fire so plant and fire officials could investigate the incident. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
“The company would like to express its sincere appreciation to the employees and contractors who were instrumental in efficiently restoring the plant back to full capacity,” said Kathleen Kirkham, director of corporate communications at Smithfield. “We also appreciate our customers, vendors and other stakeholders working with us through this situation and continue to be thankful to emergency response personnel from the local and surrounding communities for their support.”
