WASHINGTON – After receiving complaints from its customers about turkey sausage containing extraneous material that Perdue Foods LLC, based in Salisbury, Maryland, determined to be pieces of plastic, the company and the US Dept. of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) announced a recall of 2,148 lbs. of chicken sausage links on May 6.

The products, Italian Style Organic Chicken Sausage, were produced on March 27, 2017, at the company’s Gainesville, Georgia, processing plant and were shipped to BJ’s stores in Connecticut and Maryland. The problem was discovered by Perdue officials May 5. According the FSIS, the product details include:

•24-oz. plastic packages containing eight links of fully cooked ready to eat “PERDUE HARVESTLAND Italian Style Organic Chicken Sausage” bearing package code 64405 and a sell or freeze by date of 6/25/17. The products bear the establishment number “P-2617” inside the USDA mark of inspection. There have been no confirmed reports of injury due to consumption of these products. Anyone concerned about an injury or illness should contact a healthcare provider.

“We determined the source was plastic from a pair of safety goggles that was inadvertently introduced into the raw material before the sausages were stuffed,” said Jeff Shaw, Perdue’s vice president for quality assurance. “This would have resulted in a minimal amount of consumer packages potentially containing sausages with the plastic. However, out of an abundance of caution, we have decided to recall all packages of sausages produced in the same product run.”
