WASHINGTON – Tyson Foods Inc. employee, Matt Mika, was among five people shot at a Congressional baseball practice in Alexandria, Virginia, early Wednesday morning when a lone gunman opened fire at the practice field. Steve Scalise (R-La.), House Majority Whip, was also among the people shot. Members of the US Capitol police force returned fire at the gunman, identified as James Hodgkinson of Belleville, Illinois, resulting in his injury and later his death, according to a statement from President Trump.

“We have confirmed that Matt Mika, director-government relations for our Washington, DC, office, is among those who was shot this morning in Alexandria,” Tyson spokesman Gary Mickleson said in a statement. “ He has been taken to a local hospital and we’re awaiting word on his condition. Matt has worked for Tyson Foods for more than six years and we’re deeply concerned about him and his family.”

In addition to Scalise and Mika, Zach Barth, a legislative correspondent for Rep. Roger Williams (R-Texas) and two US Capitol police officers were shot. All members of the US House of Representatives were asked to go to the House floor at noon Eastern time. After a prayer service and remarks from Republican and Democratic leaders, the House adjourned for the day, according to a statement from the office Rep. Roger Marshall (R-Kan.).

“I ask that each of you join me in praying for my good friend, Steve Scalise, and the staff and Capitol Police who were injured,” Marshall said. “I don’t have any other information at this time, but I ask for your continued prayers for those injured and their families.”

The baseball practice was in preparation for the annual charity game between Republicans and Democrats scheduled to be held at Nationals Park on June 15.
