The company expects work on the plant conversion to begin in mid-July. Once complete, the new sausage production lines will produce fresh sausages for markets in Western Canada. The addition will include new equipment and modern refrigeration facilities.
“Thanks to this strategic investment, the Olymel Red Deer plant in Alberta is diversifying its local activities and enabling it, among other things, to add value to some of its raw materials,” said Réjean Nadeau, president and CEO of Olymel. “The new section for fresh sausage production at the Red Deer plant is an integral part of an investment plan directed at greater penetration in the Western Canadian market to meet growing demand for sausage products manufactured in Canada.”
The addition of sausage production capabilities is expected to reduce transport times for products heading to Western Canada, the company explained. Also, Olymel intends to expand its presence in product categories such as breakfast sausages, fresh sausages and bulk sausage meat.
The Red Deer processing plant employs more than 1,400 workers, and company’s plans to include sausage production there will create an additional 20 new jobs.
