According to a statement published by WH Group, the two companies have a production capacity of up to 45,000 metric tons, but currently produces 25,000 metric tons to serve more than 12,000 customers in its distribution network in Romania.
“The group expects the acquisitions to give Smithfield a leading position in the Romanian packaged meats market with a branded portfolio of products sold in the higher-margin traditional channel,” according to WH Group.
This past August, WH Group announced Smithfield’s $25 million investment in Chef’d, a Los Angeles-based meal kit company. In June, Smithfield acquired three Pini Group-owned packaged meat companies, based in Poland. That deal included: Pini Polska, a meat processing and packaging plant; Hamburger Pini, a case-ready meat facility; and an investment project, Royal Chicken.
