Officials have reported over a million chickens died in the incident.
No people were injured and four barns were reported as total losses after wind helped spread the fire that was initially reported in one poultry house. Crews from 22 area fire departments responded to the fire and eventually got it under control in the early hours of Oct. 3.
Mentone, Indiana-based Midwest Poultry Services LP has operated Hi-Grade for 36 years and is one of the country’s 10 largest egg producers.
Midwest Poultry Services president Bob Krouse told Fort Wayne-based WPTA-TV Hi-Grade plans to rebuild and he believed losing over a million birds in an unpreventable fire was not acceptable.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
