EDMONTON, Alberta – HQ Fine Foods recently launched a recall of submarine-style sandwiches on concerns the products may be contaminated withListeria monocytogenes. HQ Fine Foods is a division of Premium Brands Holdings. The company produces breakfast sandwiches, sub sandwiches, specialty items, wedge sandwiches and other products at a 20,000-sq.-ft. plant.

Tests revealed the presence of the pathogen and triggered the recall, according to the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA). An initial recall identified 19 affected products. But the CFIA food safety investigation led to an expanded recall of 36 varieties of sandwiches sold under the Hyggard, Quality Fast Foods, The Snack Co. and Made To Go brands. There have been no reported illnesses associated with consumption of the sandwich products.

Food contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes may not look or smell spoiled but can still cause illness. Symptoms can include vomiting, nausea, persistent fever, muscle aches, severe headache and neck stiffness.
