DENVER – China’s rapidly evolving pork industry was a major topic of discussion at last week’s US Meat Export Federation’s Strategic Planning Conference. As the world’s largest pork producer and pork importer, market conditions in China have a major impact on world trade and global pork supplies.

Hong Kong-based Joel Haggard, USMEF senior vice president, discussed the current economic climate for pork in this region, including China’s concerted effort to transform and modernize its pork production, slaughtering and processing industries.

Although China is not importing the massive supplies of pork it purchased in 2008, its need for imported pork is still quite high, considering the growth and relatively good health its own industry currently enjoys.
