CANTON, Ga.- Four people were taken to the hospital and 300 employees were evacuated from a Pilgrim’s Pride poultry plant in Canton, Georgia on Sept. 21 following a chemical spill. Pilgrim's Pride is a business unit of São Paulo, Brazil-based JBS SA,
Atlanta’s WSB-TV reported that a FedEx truck leaked an organic peroxide (type F) that was being delivered to the plant. The report said the truck was making a delivery of six 300-gallon containers.
A Pilgrim's Pride official confirmed that operations were back to normal on Sept. 24.
"The plant is fully operational and all impacted team members were released from the hospital without incident on Friday," JBS USA spokesman Cameron Bruett said. "We thank the Canton/Cherokee County local authorities and first responders who quickly and favorably resolved this situation."
Highways and major roadways were closed during the spill but were reopened the same night.
Two employees and two construction workers near the plant were hospitalized with breathing issues according to reports.
