TIMISOARA, Romania – Smithfield Romania, a subsidiary of Smithfield Foods and WH Group Ltd., recently announced that it acquired Romanian pork packaging plant Maier Corn located in Arad County, Romania.
“The acquisition strengthens Smithfield Romania’s operations by adding to the company’s existing production capabilities in Romania, which includes farms, feed mills, and processing facilities,” the Smithfield, Virginia-based company said in a statement. “As part of our strategic growth plan, the acquisition enables us to continue growing our value-added business by converting more of our fresh pork into packaged meats and expanding our packaged meats distribution in Romania.”
According to a Romanian media report, Maier Corn has operated in the country since 1994 and was owned and operated by entrepreneur Radu Maier.
Smithfield Foods also acquired three pork processing plants and five distribution centers in Romania with the acquisition of Elit SRL and Vericom SRL in 2017.
