WASHINGTON – The US Dept. of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) listed 172 poultry processing plants that have been approved to export their products to China.
Processing companies on the list include Tyson Foods Inc., Sanderson Farms Inc., Pilgrim’s Pride Corp., Perdue Foods LLC and Foster Farms.
Below is a map listing all the eligible poultry plants.
On Nov. 14, China lifted a four-year ban on US poultry imports. In 2015, China banned imports of US poultry following an outbreak of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) that claimed more than 50 million birds. The US has been free of HPAI since 2017.
Before the ban, US poultry companies exported more than $500 million in product to China. The annual value of US poultry exports to China peaked at $71 million for turkey and $722 million for chicken.
US poultry officials said the addition of the Chinese market could lead to exports of $1 billion per year on chicken products and another $1 billion on chicken paws. China continues to struggle to meet the domestic demand for meat products due to the outbreak of African Swine Fever, which destroyed around half of the country’s swineherd since 2018.
Other companies expected to receive approval to ship poultry products to China include Cargill Inc., Butterball LLC, Wayne Farms LLC, Koch Foods LLC, and Peco Foods Inc.
