“We’re saddened to report that one of our team members has died as a result of [yesterday’s] tragic accident,” said Paul Britt, manager of Tyson’s Nashville poultry complex. “The body of a Johnny Needham was found [during the afternoon of Dec. 9]. He had been part of Tyson for the past nine years. His job here at the mill involved unloading grain from rail cars. We extend our sincere sympathies to his family and friends.”
Tyson won’t speculate on what happened, Britt added, “We can tell you we will continue working cooperatively with authorities to investigate the cause of the silo collapse. We can also tell you we will also be assessing the condition of the other structures here at the feed mill. Until this safety review is complete, the mill will not operate.”
The mill employs about 30 people, however, only three – including Needham – were on-site when the silo collapsed. The other two were not hurt.
“We extend our thanks to local and state emergency response officials for their help during this very difficult situation,” Britt concluded.
