GREENSBORO, N.C. –Southern Foods, a unit of family-owned Cheney Brothers Inc. recently completed its 88,000-sq.-ft. meat and seafood facility renovation in Greensboro, North Carolina.

The company started the renovation in August 2019. The completed food plant features a beef aging room that provides prime cuts for specialized customer requirements. The room also includes high-tech temperature and humidity controls and large viewing windows that emphasize the dynamic nature of the meat curing process.

Included in the upgrades are dry storage, office mezzanine, freezers, coolers and loading docks.

“It has been many years since anyone has built a full meat, seafood and specialty grocery center of this size and scope from the ground up in North Carolina,” said Bill Mutton president of Southern Foods. “My excitement is unmeasurable as we move forward into a new facility that will enable us to expand our offerings, to both our growing customer base, as well as the public, with our cash and carry outlet. The new building will also facilitate prolonged long-term growth and provide our employees with opportunities for advancement.”

The facility also added a fish processing area, cheese processing room and express purchasing for the general public. A M King, an integrated design-build firm based in Charlotte, North Carolina, led the project.

This is the second collaboration with Cheney Brothers and A M King. In April 2019, the design-build firm completed a 169,090-sq.-ft. cold storage expansion in Statesville, North Carolina. That brought the total square footage to 265,000-sq.-ft for the facility.

Southern Foods is a full-service supplier of seafood, premium meats, artisanal cheese and global and local specialty goods. The company offers Certified Angus Beef, Cheshire Pork, Carolina Bison and other specialty food brands. Products are shipped throughout North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia, Tennessee and Georgia.
