Usually, commemorating National Hot Dog Day by the North American Meat Institute (NAMI) is one of the association’s highest profile events in Washington, DC, each summer. On the third Wednesday in July each year, franks hit the grill as politicians and industry leaders gather on the Hill to enjoy a few hot dogs together.
However, with COVID-19 still a major issue across the country, NAMI decided to turn this annual celebration into an opportunity to give back to communities across the country.
In this week’s MEAT+POULTRY podcast, returning guest Eric Mittenthal, vice president of sustainability at NAMI, discusses the recent Feeding America food drive, designed to donate hundreds of thousands of hot dogs around the country.
Mittenthal also describes a revitalized campaign this year called Wiener Wednesday, a promotion to encourage consumers to enjoy hot dogs weekly.
Mittenthal also covers what NAMI has done during the pandemic to help its members cope with the ongoing challenges, along with future projects the Institute is developing for the industry.
