WASHINGTON – Combined cattle and calves in the U.S. and Canada totaled 106.7 million head on Jan. 1, down 1% from the 107.7 million on Jan. 1, 2009, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture. All cows and heifers that have calved, at 45.9 million head, were down 2% from one year earlier.

As of Jan, 1, all U.S. cattle and calves totaled 93.7 million head, 1% below the 94.5 million on Jan. 1, 2009. All cows and heifers that have calved, at 40.5 million head, were down 1% from a year ago.

All cattle and calves in Canada as of Jan. 1 totaled 13.0 million head, down 1% from the 13.2 million on Jan. 1, 2009. All cows and heifers that have calved, at 5.45 million, were down 3% from a year ago.

Combined sheep and lambs in the U.S. and Canada totaled 6.44 million head on Jan, 1, down 2%from the 6.56 million on Jan. 1, 2009. Breeding sheep, at 4.81 million head, were down 1% from a year ago and market sheep and lambs, at 1.63 million head, were down 3% from last year.

Also as of Jan 1, all sheep and lambs in the U.S. totaled 5.63 million head, 2% below the 5.75 million head on Jan. 1, 2009. Breeding sheep, at 4.19 million head, were down 1% from a year ago, while market sheep and lambs, at 1.44 million head, were down 4% from last year.

All sheep and lambs in Canada as of the first of the year totaled 807,000 head, virtually unchanged from last year's number of 808,000. Breeding sheep, at 615,000 head, were down 1% from last year. Market sheep and lambs, at 192,000 head, were up 4% from a year ago.
