SHANGHAI — McDonald’s Corp. earlier this month opened a new eight-story, sustainability-focused headquarters in Shanghai.
The new headquarters was built with a focus on energy-saving and environmental responsibility, as well as promotion of cross-functional collaboration and flexible working. More than 600 employees from McDonald’s China and the Shanghai market will work from the new building, which has no fixed seating arrangements for employees. Instead, the building features desks, booths, lounges and high tables for employees to choose to work from.
“People are our most valuable asset,” said Phyllis Cheung, chief executive officer of McDonald’s China.
The new headquarters also has outdoor terraces, coffee bars, gyms and activity centers, as well as a McDonald’s restaurant that is open to employees and the public. The restaurant will be the first McDonald’s restaurant in China to receive the LEED Platinum certification, the company said.
Additionally, the new headquarters will house Hamburger University and a food innovation center. McDonald’s said it expects to train and develop more than 75,000 restaurant workers in China at Hamburger University over the next five years. Meanwhile, chefs will utilize the food innovation center to create new menu items for the Chinese market.
