SALT LAKE CITY, UTAH — The Utah Department of Agriculture and Food (UDAF) reported a confirmed case of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) on a turkey farm in Sanpete County.
UDAF officials helped contain the HPAI outbreak to the single farm for the time being by assisting with depopulation efforts and performing tests on nearby farms and flocks.
The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said the recent reported HPAI cases do to pose an immediate public health concern.
So far, one human case of this strain of HPAI has been reported.
“While we have seen a decrease in cases as we have gone into summer, avian influenza still continues to be a concern in our state,” said Dr. Dean Taylor, state veterinarian. “We urge bird owners to remain vigilant in watching for symptoms in their flocks and practicing proper biosecurity measures.”
