KANSAS CITY, MO. — Meat and poultry processors across Texas and Arkansas canceled various shifts following an ice storm that hit the region the last several days.

Wayne-Sanderson Farms announced on Jan. 31 that the first shifts of the processing facility in  Palestine, Texas, would not operate on Feb. 1. The company said it plans for employees to work on the second shift and operations to return to normal on Feb. 2.

A spokesperson for Wayne-Sanderon Farms told MEAT+POULTRY that the processing plant in Waco, Texas would not operate the first, second or third shift on Feb. 1. 

“We are actively monitoring weather conditions,” the company said on Facebook. “Should any operations updates be announced, we will post them on our social media channels.”

Other Wayne-Sanderson locations that could be affected by the weather include the Tyler and Bryan, Texas, processing facilities. At the time of publication, the company said those two plants would run as normal on Feb. 1.

In Arkansas, Wayne-Sanderson Farms said on Feb. 1 that its Danville facility would operate as usual after canceling two shifts on Jan. 31. 

Poultry processor George’s Inc. posted on Facebook that its Kansas Street plant in Springdale, Ark., would cancel the first shift on Feb. 1 with the second shift starting at the regular time. The Porter Street plant in Springdale would not operate at all on Feb. 1.

The company added that its Batesville plant would not operate as well on Feb. 1. Facilities in Rogers and Cassville canceled first shifts on Feb. 1 but planned on the usual start for second shifts.
