WASHINGTON — On Feb. 3, the US Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) announced two public health alerts: one for a frozen chicken product and one for ready-to-eat (RTE) stuffed chicken.
The frozen chicken product labeled as Chicken Korma with Basmati Turmeric Rice may instead contain Vegetable Tikka Masala with Turmeric Rice. The latter dish contains cashews, a known allergen that was not declared on the label.
The problem was discovered when the food manufacturer notified FSIS of consumer complaints reporting that products labeled as chicken korma actually contained vegetable tikka masala, which is known to include cashews.
The items, which were produced on Nov. 8, are subject to the misbranding public health alert:
- 10-oz containers of “Wegmans Chicken Korma with Basmati Turmeric Rice” with Best By 08 NOV 2023.
The frozen chicken products bear the establishment number “P-34641” inside the USDA mark of inspection and were shipped to retail stores in New York and Pennsylvania.
FSIS also issued a public health alert for Vanguard Culinary Group LTD’s RTE broccoli stuffed chicken breasts. FSIS said the product may not be fully cooked due to under processing and should not be consumed. Because the product is no longer available at retail locations, a recall was not issued.
The Fayetteville, NC-based establishment produced the RTE items on Dec. 3. The following product is subject to the health alert:
- 16 oz (1 lb) vacuum sealed trays containing “PARK STREET DELI Broccoli Stuffed Chicken BONELESS SKINLESS CHICKEN BREAST HAND STUFFED WITH BROCCOLI & CHEDDAR AU GRATIN” with a use by date of 1/30/2023.
The products bear the establishment number “P-8334” inside the USDA mark of inspection and were shipped to retail locations in Alabama, Florida, New York, Pennsylvania and Virginia.
FSIS discovered the problem after consumers reported that the product labeled as RTE appeared raw.
There have been no confirmed reports of adverse reactions from consumption of either chicken product.
