PARKVILLE, MO. — Retired Army Ranger Patrick Montgomery started KC Cattle Company in 2016 and achieved the first full year of sales in 2018. Born and raised in Kansas City, Mo., Montgomery has remained loyal to the Chiefs, and Kansas City, through thick and thin starting at his first understanding of the game of football. Montgomery believes the Chiefs’ recent success, as well as Kansas City itself, both have contributed to increased business as Super Bowl week ramps up to the game.
“Kansas City is starting to get noticed,” Montgomery said. “From the NFL draft this spring to winning the World Cup games, people are figuring out KC is the place to be. This is going to be good for my business as we expand our retail presence in Kansas City. I think a lot of the attention can be attributed to the Kansas City Chiefs and the all-star team they’ve been repping for the last couple years.”
While KC Cattle’s clear best seller is the Wagyu Beef Hot Dogs, its strips, ribeyes, filet mignon, brats, ground beef and chorizo are all great sellers as well.
“If you’re looking to entertain for a Super Bowl party, I’d go with summer sausage for a charcuterie board, chorizo for a queso dip, or ground beef for some sliders,” Montgomery said.
In addition to some good fortune and blessings, KC Cattle Company conducts its business in a way that exponentially increases the odds that it will succeed. Asking common sense questions and adaptability give the company its edge. KC Cattle looks honestly at the things it does and its competitors and asks why, and can it be done better? In addition, it handles sales with both quality product and quality customer service.
The KC Cattle property averages 250 head of American Wagyu (50% wagyu/50% Angus) and fullblood Wagyu (99% Wagyu) and harvests 70 head a month.
“We just switched to a new processor we are excited to partner with,” Montgomery said. “Our first appointment is in a few weeks.”
He said there are no current plans for a company slaughter facility and added, “I think the pandemic taught everyone there is a need for processors throughout the country. I’m seeing a lot of new ones come online in our area, so I’m hoping this can postpone us making that expenditure.”
KC Cattle Company has worked on its efficiencies and processes since it began. For the future, it plans to market itself to the masses and scale up at a pace that maintains the quality of the product and customer service.
“There are a lot of issues facing the beef market going forward and we have some cool plans to innovate,” Montgomery said.
Giving back
Montgomery started KC Cattle Company after a dark period in his life. His brother-in-law and fellow Ranger, Jeremy Katzenberger, was killed in action on June 14, 2011. Montgomery searched for something to help him recover from the loss. The journey led him to a point where working the land and working the cattle brought him relief, happiness and joy every day. Part of that happiness comes in the form of giving back to the veteran community.
KC Cattle’s giving back has included the donation of up to 25% of its sales for the week of Memorial Day to the Sua Sponte Foundation. Sua Sponte’s mission includes supporting the immediate and urgent needs of Rangers and their families during times of crisis, maintaining a memorial dedicated to the fallen warriors of the 1st Ranger Battalion located at Hunter Army Airfield in Savannah, Ga., and creating, funding and supporting events that seek to improve morale and unit cohesiveness.
KC Cattle’s Give Back Ground Beef Program gives customers the chance to join KC Cattle in giving back. The current program benefits Benilde Hall Safe Haven for Veterans. When customers purchase a pound of ground beef through the program the funds go to services to help veterans by reducing the cost of feeding those enrolled in the Safe Haven Program.
The Safe Haven program offers housing, three meals a day, clothing, individual counseling, group education for things such as relapse prevention, budgeting and job opportunities for veterans. Prior to the Benilde Hall Safe Haven for Veterans, the Give Program was partnered with War Horses for Veterans, a program to provide therapy to veterans through interaction with horses.
