VAN BUREN, ARK. — Residents of the city of Van Buren, Ark., are rallying around Tyson Foods’ workers impacted by a recent poultry plant closure. The Van Buren community is holding a career and resource fair on April 29 with Tyson workers in mind but is opening the event to any and all job seekers.
The city of Van Buren announced the details of the job fair on its Facebook page. The Van Buren Chamber and the Crawford County Adult Education Center will host the event at the Van Buren High School on April 29 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
“We are pleased to be partnering with the chamber to serve our community, and we look forward to helping the Tyson team members with any training they may need to be successful with the transition into their next career,” said Debbie Faubus-Kendrick, executive director of the Crawford County Adult Education Center.
On March 13, Tyson announced plans to close its Van Buren facility, which employs 969 workers. Four days after Tyson’s announcement, leaders from the Van Buren community gathered to support the impacted workers.
“Immediately after the plant closing was announced, this community came together to find ways to help,” said Joe Hurst, the mayor of Van Buren. “I’m thankful to all our partners and I’m optimistic that the career and resource fair will be a great benefit to all who attend.”
Officials from Twin Rivers Foods also reached out to Tyson employees at the Van Buren facility, offering job opportunities at its Fort Smith, Ark., plant.
