SAN FRANCISCO — Plant-based deli and charcuterie company Prime Roots announced raising $30 million in a Series B round, bringing total funding to $50 million. Prime Roots plans to expand to deli counters and restaurants nationwide with the funding.
"People are asking for sustainable meat options that taste good, make them feel good and do good with less planet impact,” said Kimberlie Le, founder and chief executive officer of Prime Roots. “Prime Roots delivers on all three: taste, nutrition and sustainability. This new funding is a testament to the market opportunity for the next generation of plant-based meats that meet consumer expectations while forging into old world categories like deli with disruptive innovation."
Prime Roots’ proprietary fermentation and food science technology creates the microscopic texture of meat with an umami taste from plants, specifically koji mycelium. The company’s plant-based deli products include cracked pepper turkey, black forest ham, hickory bacon, salami and pepperoni. Prime Roots said its products contain no nitrates, preservatives, cholesterol, soy nor wheat.
As opposed to the years some traditional meats can take to produce, Prime Roots’ deli products take three to five days.
