ROSEMONT, ILL. — US Foods Holding Corp. released its 2022 Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Report, the first report to include the company’s official progress toward reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
“Last year was a transformative year for our CSR journey as investments in additional resources and processes drove business imperative sustainability initiatives, such as the development of our formal GHG emission reduction targets,” said Dave Flitman, chief executive officer of US Foods. “Throughout 2022, we made strong progress against all three of our CSR strategic focus areas — Products, People and Planet — and we look forward to furthering our sustainability priorities and setting goals across the company, as well as deepening our engagement with our shareholders, customers and suppliers.”
After over 150 years in business, US Foods serves 250,000 customers and generates $34.1 billion in revenue.
US Foods’ CSR report uses the Sustainability Accounting Standards Board’s (SASB) Food Retailers & Distributors standard, the Task Force on Climate-related Financial Disclosures (TCFD) and the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) Standards.
In terms of its goals for Products, US Foods set out to grow its portfolio with local, sustainable products while maintaining its commitment to food safety and quality.
The company maintained year-over-year growth with a total of 2,600 differentiated products that are local, sustainable or support well-being. US Foods partners with around 90 suppliers through its Serve Local program, which requires products to be sourced within 400 miles or within the state from where the products ship to customers.
In US Foods’ Responsibly Sourced Proteins Program, the company only uses beef, pork and chicken that meet the USDA Standard for all natural and are raised without antibiotics and no added hormones.
The company’s goal for People is to make a positive difference in the lives of associates and communities that US Foods serves. US Foods works to achieve this by creating an inclusive and dynamic workforce and investing in communities through giving and volunteerism.
This past year, US Foods filled 47% of new or open leadership roles with women or people of color, which exceeded its goal of 40%. The CSR report noted that 56% of US Foods associates are women or people of color as of Jan. 1, 2023, up 2% from the previous year.
In 2022, US Foods spent $723 million with nearly 500 certified diverse suppliers, which was up 87% in spend year-over-year.
In donating about $13 million worth of product in 2022, US Foods estimated it gave the equivalent of six million meals to support communities and fight against hunger.
The company also awarded US Foods Scholars program scholarships to 18 students. Since the program’s creation, US Foods has given over $1.3 million in scholarships to nearly 70 students.
“Moving forward, we are exploring new US Foods Scholars programming to provide additional mentorship and professional skill-building opportunities to support scholars as they transition from school to their careers of choice,” the report said.
In December 2022, US Foods received Science-Based Targets initiative (SBTi) approval for its GHG emissions reduction targets. The company committed to reducing Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions by 32.5% by 2032, from a 2019 baseline.
Since 2019, the company has reduced GHG emissions by 13%.
US Foods reported that it converted all California broadline distribution centers from traditional diesel fuel to renewable diesel fuel.
By the end of 2023, US Foods has committed to add 30 electric vehicle (EV) trucks to its fleet.
