GARNER, NC. — Butterball LLC released its annual Thanksgiving Outlook Report on Aug. 29, detailing consumer sentiment and expected food purchasing behavior for the holiday season that’s less than three months away.

Through a partnership with Circana, Butterball surveyed 1,838 US adults, who represented a sample of the nation's population, between July 3-14.

Overall, Butterball found consumers to be optimistic in planning their celebrations. While the report showed that consumers are wary of how inflation will impact their plans, 82% of hosts are still planning on serving turkey at their Thanksgiving dinner.

Rather than eliminating the turkey — a common centerpiece for Thanksgiving meals — hosts are looking to cut costs other ways. For example, some hosts plan to ask guests to bring part of the meal. Others plan on asking for help with the meal expenses. Another portion noted they will host a less formal gathering.

"While inflation remains top of mind, it's encouraging to see consumers' continued dedication to gathering with friends and family this holiday season, and to gathering around turkey specifically," said Chad McFadden, senior retail brand manager at Butterball. "We're proud to play a part in helping to bring people together and pass love on this holiday season."

A large portion of the US population — 89% of consumers — is planning to either host or attend a celebration of the same size or larger this year. Back to pre-pandemic numbers, an average of 9 people per celebration are anticipated to attend.

Turkey remains a top priority for consumers partaking in Thanksgiving dinner. Over 80% plan on purchasing the same size of turkey as last year or larger, and most consumers are looking for whole turkeys whether they’re fresh or frozen.

Following the popularity of turkeys this year are staple side dishes and desserts like stuffing, pie and potatoes.

Butterball said its Turkey-Talk Line, which has operated for over 40 years, will once again be offering hosts support in preparing their Thanksgiving centerpiece. Culinary experts will be available to offer one-on-one advice via phone, text, chat and social channels beginning Nov. 1.
