WASHINGTON — Multiple cases of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) were reported on Nov. 20, including three different outbreaks that occurred in the same county.

In Edmunds County, South Dakota, outbreaks were reported in three separate commercial turkey flocks. Nearly 83,000 total turkeys were affected — 30,100 turkey breeder replacement hens, 19,200 turkey breeder hens and 33,400 commercial meat turkeys, according to data from the US Department of Agriculture (USDA).

The three latest cases bumped South Dakota’s total number of outbreaks reported in commercial flocks up to 80 since the wave of HPAI first began.

Last month, South Dakota was one of the states to see the highest number of HPAI cases.

Meanwhile, California reported HPAI in a commercial duck breeder flock in Fresno County on Nov. 20, affecting 23,400 birds.

Additionally, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) reported two more outbreaks in commercial flocks on Nov. 20. HPAI detections were confirmed in flocks in Chilliwack, British Columbia, and Rouville, Quebec.

CFIA did not report the type of poultry nor the number of birds affected.
