DETROIT — EW Grobbel, a Detroit-based meat company known for its corned beef, announced the acquisition of a manufacturing plant in St. Clair Shores, Mich. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Grobbel’s said the acquisition is part of an expansion effort to meet the expected increase of regional and national demand for its products.

"This expansion epitomizes our team's commitment to responsible and purposeful growth. It opens doors for us to explore new products and markets, ensuring that we evolve while upholding our 140-year commitment to quality and excellence,” said Jason Grobbel, president. “As we embark on this new chapter, we extend our gratitude to our entire team who have been instrumental in supporting us on this remarkable journey of expansion."

Located at 20643 Stephens St., the acquired facility spans 90,000 square feet and was previously operated by Alexander & Hornung until the plant was closed in 2023.

In collaboration with Perdue Premium Meat Co., Grobbel’s plans to renovate the manufacturing space to resume the production of food products and contribute as a regional employer.

With comprehensive modifications scheduled early this year, the site is set to be operational by mid-2024. Grobbel’s anticipates 30-40 new jobs will be created as a result of the acquisition.

The St. Clair Shores facility marks Grobbel’s second expansion outside of its historic manufacturing hub in Detroit’s Eastern Market. In 2018, Grobbel’s expanded to Taylor, Mich., with manufacturing and distribution capabilities.
