FARINA, ILL. — A layer operation from Wabash Valley Producer’s Farina, Ill., facility was destroyed in a fire on May 29, according to a source from the egg producer.
While no persons were injured, four barns were lost with 1.2 million laying hens inside. An additional fifth barn was still standing, but the birds in that building will likely be euthanized due to high amounts of smoke inhalation, the source said.
All birds were cage free layers.
According to media reports, 27 fire departments were called onto the scene. The fire was eventually put out early the next day.
