LOUISVILLE, KY. — A JBS USA pork processing facility in Louisville, Ky., was forced to evacuate briefly on the night of June 13 while teams worked to contain a chemical leak.

Information from the Louisville Fire Department said that fire and hazmat crews responded to the area, along with the Metropolitan Sewer District (MSD), Louisville Water Co. and the local health department.

A spokesperson for JBS confirmed the leak when asked by MEAT+POULTRY.

“We had a sodium bisulfite leak in the rendering area of our Louisville pork production facility last night that resulted in a temporary evacuation of the plant,” said Nikki Richardson, spokesperson for JBS USA.

The company also confirmed that no injuries occurred and that the leak had stopped. On June 14, the Louisville plant was open for normal operations.
